Correlation of fiber shape measures with dilute suspension properties

چکیده
The correlations between the intrinsic viscosity of fiber suspensions and 17 measures of fiber shape were inve stigated. The intrinsic viscosities of suspensions of fibers with various shapes and aspect ratios were determined numerically. The shapes studied include different degrees of fiber curvature, angular bends, helical shapes, randomly generated shapes, and others. The shape measure that correlated most strongly with intrinsic viscosity was an invariant of the hydrodynamic resis tance tensor; this invariant is related to the hydrodynamic drag coefficients on a fiber translating in the three principal direc tions. This measure can be computed from 3D images of real fibers, and could potentially be a useful quantity for describing fiber shape. These results also suggest that experimentallymeasured intrinsic viscosities can be used to characterize fiber shape, either directly or by extracting the invariant from experi mental data.

Nanofluids for Heat Transfer Enhancement – A Review
A nanofluid is a dilute liquid suspension of particles with at least one critical dimension smaller than ~100 nm. Research works so far suggest that nanofluids offer excellent heat transfer enhancement over conventional base fluids. The enhancement depends on several factors such as particle shape, particle size distribution, volume fraction of nanoparticles, temperature, pH, and thermal conduc...

With advances in anisotropic particle synthesis, particle shape is now a feasible parameter for tuning suspension properties. However, there is a need to determine how these newly synthesized particles affect suspension properties and a need to solve the inverse problem of inferring the particle shape from property measurements. Either way, accurate suspension property predictions are required....
متن کاملFlow-induced gelation of microfiber suspensions.
The flow behavior of fiber suspensions has been studied extensively, especially in the limit of dilute concentrations and rigid fibers; at the other extreme, however, where the suspensions are concentrated and the fibers are highly flexible, much less is understood about the flow properties. We use a microfluidic method to produce uniform concentrated suspensions of high aspect ratio, flexible ...
متن کاملModeling the Tensile Behavior of Fibers with Geometrical and Structural Irregularities
Virtually all fibers exhibit some dimensional and structural irregularities. These include the conventional textile fibers, the high-performance brittle fibers and even the newly developed nano-fibers. In recent years, we have systematically examined the effect of fiber dimensional irregularities on the mechanical behavior of the irregular fibers. This paper extends our research to include the ...

The viscosity or, more precisely, the rheological behavior of colloidal suspensions is most sensitive to the overall properties of both the particles (mainly size and shape) and their double layers (surface charge and double layer thickness). The mere presence of uncharged colloids alters the ̄ow ®eld in such a way that the apparent dynamic viscosity of the suspension, g, is larger than that of ...
